Alex Herring of Albuquerque Academy won the boys invitational mile Saturday night at Chandler Rotary Invitational, edging Ironwood’s Steve Magnuson down the stretch. Herring finished the mile in 4 minutes, 12.33 seconds. He won the 1600, which was run simultaneously, in 4:10.70, the best high school time in the country this season.

Magnuson was second (4:13.93 mile), Brian Shrader of Sinagua was third (4:15.31) and Sherod Hardt of Queen Creek was fourth (4:17.78).

In one the fastest high school girls mile races this season, Emily LaValley of Classical Academy in Colorado edged Sarah Fakler of Xavier at the finish line. LaValley’s time was 4:57.58. Fakler was second with 4:57.83.

Fakler exacted a measure of revenge in winning the 3200 (10:47.48), more than 20 seconds ahead of LaValley.

Chandler took both team titles. The Wolves girls rolled up 145.50 points, easily outdistancing second place Desert Vista, which had 62. Xavier was third with 59.

The boys team stadings were closer. Chandler finish with 67 points and Brophy was second with 37. Tolleson was third with 34.

Jaide Stepter of Canyon del Oro won the girls 300 meter hurdles in 43.79, fifth best in the country this and bettering the meet record set, 44.26 last year set by Kala Stepter.

Jasmine Todd paced the Chandler girls with two victories, winning the long jump (17 feet, 8 inches) and triple jump (38-01.25).

Hannah Carson of Chandler won the shot put (43-03.50) and Alexis Roberts won the 400 (57.04).

Other notable girls performances included:

Shaylah Simpson of Desert Vista won the pole vault (13-00.00).

Serene Williams of Peoria won the 100 (12.02) and 200 (25.01).

Trae Armstrong of Deer Valley won the boys 100 (10.91) and 200 (22.26).

Harry Danilevics of Brophy won the 300 hurdles (37.94), break the meet record of 37.98 by Westwood’s Cylend Simmons in 2005.
