They didn’t win, three Arizona runners broke the 9-minute mark Saturday in the boys 3200 meter invitational and at the Arcadia Invitational in California.

Jake Hurysz from Eastern Alam in North Carolina won in 8 minutes, 49.76 seconds, the best high school time in the nation this season. Brian Shrader of Sinagua was second in 8:53.09. Steve Magnuson of Ironwood Ridge was 10th (8:58.27) and Sherod Hardt was 15th (8:59.09).

The previous best 3200 mark in Arizona had been Billy Orman of Tuba City, who won the Chanlder Rotary in 9:24.09.

Orman ran in the seeded 3200 at Arcaida and finished second in 9:05.73.

On Friday, the Xavier relay team of Sarah Fakler, Daylee Burr, Katie Penney and Jessica Tonn won the girls 4x1 mile relay in the nation’s best 20:31.00.

Brian McBride of Sandra Day O'Connor had a state best in the boys high jump (6 feet, 11 inches) and finished third.

Alex Bishop of Brophy was second in the boys pole vault (15 feet, 7 inches ).

Shaylah Simpson and Emily Heisler of Desert Vista tied for fifth (12-1) in the girls pole vault.
