Arcadia topped Notre Dame in five sets Wednesday at Arcadia High School, running their record to 13-2 with wins on consecutive days in region play.

Notre Dame falls to 6-4 on the year after the heart breaking loss. In their first five-set match of the season, the Titans prevailed 25-23, 23-25, 25-13, 25-27, 15-7 thanks to timely serving.

In the first set, the Titans appeared to be a much better team, scoring the first 10 points. Senior Bri Burns led a Notre Dame comeback, and the Saints pulled to within a point before Sonya Bray and Arcadia finished off the set.

In a very dramatic second set, Arcadia started slowly due to poor communication and inaccurate setting. Notre Dame had a 21-17 lead before Arcadia sophomore Izzy Miller drove home several spikes to bring the Titans within a point. It was not enough, though, as the Saints evened up the match with a two-point win.

In the most lopsided set of the match, the Titans pummeled the Saints in the third set. Captain Morgan Hayes helped lead the way with a key block, which helped the Titans pull away. Great setting by sophomore standout Jensen Barton was also a key factor in the set. The Titans appeared less complacent then in the previous set.

In the set of the night, the Saints were able to strike back thanks their captain Caroline Atsaves. Barton’s sets kept the Titans within striking distance, but Notre Dame prevailed, closing the match-tying set with an ace.

Notre Dame’s youth (the Saints have only one senior) showed in the deciding fifth set. Key mistakes contributed to the Titans cause. Izzy Miller’s serving was the ultimate difference for Arcadia.
