The 96 Sereno girls demolished TSA Red 7-0 Sunday in the semifinals of the Sereno Classic Tournament at Red Mountain Park in Mesa.

Megan Dries scored Sereno’s first goal off a cross from Nikki Walts in the first 10 minutes of the game. Gabby Soian quickly put a second in, and then went on to assist Walts’ second goal and score two more goals herself.

Walts assisted the third goal as well, finally giving the ball to Jorian Baucom after a nice passing sequence down the left side.

Only two of the seven goals were scored in the second half, both of which were scored by Soian.

As the TSA coach Lisa Fraser said before the game, “This is going to be a tough one.”

Sereno advances to face Alliance, a 2-1 winner over Gilbert Arsenal in the other semifinal, in Monday’s championship.

98 Sereno White 5, 98 Thunder Gold 0

The 98 Sereno girls dominated the Thunder .

Sereno’s first goal came from Gina Bracomonte, who took an unguarded shot in the first 10 minutes of the game into the upper left corner of the Thunder’s goal. Sophia Struckman scored shortly after Bracomonte with a short pass into the goal.

The last goal of the first half was scored by Jenna Parkhurst, who put away a shot that crossed the 18-yard box in the air.

The two goals in the second half were scored by Courtney Lankford, from outside the box, and Josee Jacobellis, who poked the ball past the diving Thunder goalie and passed it with her inside foot into the net.

96 TSA Red 2, 96 Sereno South 1

Kendall Karon earned the 96 TSA Red a 2-1 victory over 96 Sereno South and a trip to the semifinals of the Sereno Classic Tournament when she finished a header in the last 20 minutes of the second half.

Sereno scored first in a physical opening half about fifteen minutes into the game, when Caylee Carter drove a volley past TSA’s diving goalie.

Sereno remained ahead until Lysette Alcantar put TSA on the board after receiving an attempted clearance by a Sereno defender just outside the box.

Sereno spent most of the second half in TSA’s half, but just could not put one away.

“I am really proud of my team,” said TSA head coach Lisa Fraser. “We are down numbers due to injury and they still never quit. I think we have been very consistent and I hope to keep that up.”

Although Sereno racked up the score, the fledgling Thunder put up a good fight.

“We have been a competitive team for about three years,” said Thunder coach Benny Sanchez. “We are planning on another tournament to California before State Cup.”
