Sereno Soccer Club announced the boys’ and girls’ 2010 college commitments Monday night at their annual college signing night at Catz Sports Performance Center in Scottsdale.

“This night is really about honoring those kids who are graduating and recognizing all the hard work that they have put in over the years,” said Matt Midkiff, coach of the 98 Girls White team and director of physical therapy at Catz. “It is also a chance to give the young players someone to look up to.”

Younger Sereno players and families attended the ceremony, which began with a speech from Dave Simeone, the 92 and 93 Girls White coach and Sereno director of programming.

“This night is a culmination of years of work, and a transition in these players’ lives,” Simeone said. “The next step in their development is to go to college and what an exciting step it is.”

The players being recognized introduced themselves one by one to the audience, all of them wearing shirts emblazoned with their future university’s logo.

Twenty-four girls and eight boys made up the signing class, which represented schools from all over the country, including those with top soccer programs like Santa Clara, the University of Portland and the University of San Diego.

Ellen Parker, a 92 Girls White player, came back from her first semester at the University of Portland for the signing, where she has already been taking classes and practicing with the soccer team.

“I graduated early and wanted to start playing college soccer right away,” said Parker, an attacking midfielder and national team player. “The people I am around now will help me succeed in life after college, when I will hopefully go pro.”

Parker is one of four players from the 92 Girls White team who are already playing collegiate soccer.

“Sereno helped me to get where I am now, and I can’t imagine any other club in any other state getting me this prepared,” Parker said. “I already love college soccer and am so glad I went in ready.”
