Despite great goalkeeping by SC Del Sol 93s’ Patrick Pray, the Gilbert Arsenal 93s’ Alex Lapose proved to be too much for Del Sol to handle Saturday, as he scored both Arsenal goals, including the overtime winner, to give his team a 2-1 victory in the U17 boys State Cup winners’ bracket quarterfinals.

It appeared early on that Del Sol was the dominant team, as Reed Hansen scored the first goal of the game not even 10 minutes in. However, Hansen’s goal seemed to spark Arsenal’s offense, as Arsenal forwards and midfielders were able to repeatedly attack Pray in the goal. Pray, however, made some spectacular saves to protect his team’s lead heading into the second half.

But approximately 20 minutes into the half, Arsenal finally got on the board with a chip shot by Lapose from the right side of the goal, beating a diving Pray. For the rest of regulation, the game was a defensive struggle as both teams were held scoreless.

It didn’t take long in overtime for Arsenal to take the lead. Just six minutes into the overtime, Lapose scored again, this time with the eventual game-winner from the right side of the goal.

Arsenal’s win set the stage for a matchup next week against Santos 93, which defeated Cisco 93 by a score of 2-1 on Saturday.

Arsenal coach Andrew Guarneri said, “If we play like this, they’re gonna kill us.”
