Arcadia opened the 4A-II state girls soccer tournament with a 3-0 win Thursday over the Williams Field Black Hawks in a rainy game at Arcadia High.
“I was a little bit worried about the rain,” said Arcadia head coach Daniel Polan. “It’s just one more variable to have thrown into such an important game.”
Arcadia started, spending the first 15 minutes on Williams Field’s half. They took multiple shots on goal but just couldn’t put any away. Williams Field goalie Pam Vasquez foiled Arcadia forward Tianna Stewart’s break away, while Natasha Friedman took a hard shot that bounced off the cross bar.
Williams Field came back at the 15 minute mark, advancing into Arcadia’s half and nearly getting two goals from forward Mattie Smith.
Arcadia ended up scoring the only goal in the first half when Natasha Friedman received a through ball just to the outside right of the box and finished a shot over the goalie’s head.
Grace Kim scored Arcadia’s second goal in the first five minutes of the second half when she finished a close shot off of Karla Varela’s free kick.
The play turned very physical, and it was still a close game until Rachel Ditullio scored off an on-the-ground cross into the middle of the box.
Arcadia met Williams Field last week in both team’s final game of the regular season, beating the Black Hawks 7-0. Polan says this game was much closer in more than just the score.
“The first half was very stressful,” he said. “Williams Field came out fighting. At halftime I just kept telling the girls to calm down and stay focused. They came back in the second ready to play, which wasn’t an easy task.” |
