Tianna Stewart scored the game-winning penalty kick to lead the Arcadia Titans to a girls soccer victory over the Verrado Vipers Friday night in the second round of the 4A Division II State Tournament at Red Mountain Park.

Both teams started the game a bit frenzied, with few shots for the first 15 minutes. Stewart was fouled in the box about 20 minutes in, receiving a penalty kick. Karla Varela took the kick and a follow up shot, both of which were blocked by the Verrado goalie, Celia Baez, to keep the first half scoreless.

The second half opened with a Verrado defender putting in an own goal when the ball ricocheted off her head during a scramble in the box.

Arcadia stayed ahead until late in the half when Bianca Bernal volleyed Hillary Romero’s cross into the back of Arcadia’s net, leading her team into overtime.

The first half of overtime was scoreless, and the play was even.

Stewart scored a header off Varela’s cross in the second half, but it was taken away by the referee. who called a foul against Arcadia and gave Verrado the ball. Overtime ended with a score of 0-0, and each team lined up for penalty kicks.

“I was nervous about taking penalty kicks,” Arcadia head coach Daniel Polan said. “It’s a stressful situation.”

Despite the pressures, Arcadia put away all four of their opportunities, while Amy Gutierrez was the only one to finish for Verrado. Stewart put in the game-winning shot on the ground into the right corner, and the team ran out to celebrate.

“It would have been very disheartening to lose after we had that overtime goal taken away,” Polan said. “I am proud of the girls and couldn’t be happier with the result.”

The Titans face Flagstaff at 5 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals at Chaparral High School.
