Coming from behind, the Phoenix Heat defeated Mesa Shockwave 5-2 Sunday in the 16u B final of the TCS Holiday Championship Toy Drive at Paseo Racquet Club and Park in Glendale.

After three innings of dominant defense from both teams, Shockwave scored the first two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With Jenna Huerta on third and Courtney Stoll on first base, Lauren Rector hit a line-drive double to score both runners.

The Heat countered with two runs in the top of the fifth. Riding the upsurge to the sixth and final inning, the Heat's Oliviah Valencia dropped a hit down the line in left. Natalie Medina walked, and Kassandra Becerra  followed with an inside-the-park home run to make it 5-2.

“We came out and played the way we can play,” said Juanito Dorado, Jr., coach for the Heat. “This is probably the best tournament they played.  I'm proud of them.”

Both teams played up from ther regular 14u division.

18u B

Shockwave-Rhodes 2, Shockwave-Nelson 1

The game was a battle of pitching and defense, both teams not allowing any runs in the game going into the tiebreaker.

Shockwave-Rhodes started the inning with Autumn Rhodes on second base. Raven Hooks bunted. The ball was mishandled. Rhodes came home and Hooks advanced to second. Serena Guzman followed witih a single, scoring Hooks to take make it 2-0.

Shockwave-Nelson answered with a run. Kaitlyn Nunez drove in Emily Lodge.

“It was a good pitching match-up,” said Dusty Rhodes, head coach for Shockwave-Rhodes. “We were lucky to catch them off guard with a bunt.  It was just solid competition between the both of them.”

Shockwave-Nelson is a 16u team playing up in the tournament. Shockwave-Rhodes is a true 18u team.
