Gaffin tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout. She struck out two and walked one.
After stranding two base runners in the first inning, Gaffin stymied the Velocity offense for the rest of the game. The talented hurler never allowed more than one hit in an inning and put together two 1-2-3 innings, in the second and the fourth.
The Saints relied on a few timely hits and one big fly to get on the board. While the team had no multi-run innings, it did score once in each of the first four frames.
Rachel Meyer came up with the biggest hit of the day, crushing a solo homer to left to give the Saints a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Saints put up their first run in the first. Leadoff batter Destinee Luno walked and scored on an RBI single by Aly Ramsaier.
The Saints increased their lead to 2-0 in the second. Liz Erickson singled and scored on Megan Werbach’s RBI ground-rule double to left.
Luno finished up the scoring for the Saints in the fourth inning when she plated Taylor Tomtech with an RBI single. Luno finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk, one RBI and one run scored.
Team Velocity looked poised to score in the first inning, but could not capitalize after Stephanie Tatham doubled with one out. Following a walk to Danielle Stensby, Gaffin induced a pop up and a ground out to end the threat. |
