The Desert Gemz beat the AZ Titans 6-2 Sunday for the 14u title of the USSSA Sunny Classic Qualifier at Big League Dreams.
Before the title game, it looked like the Gemz would leave BLD disappointed before rallying from three runs down in the semifinal and earning a shot at the championship.
The Gemz carried that momentum into the title game, scoring the game’s first run quickly as three of the first four batters got on base.
“We came out rolling from the get-go,” said Desert Gemz coach Steve Appel.
Cheyenne Moffet and Andrea Wilson both had RBI for the Gemz in the second inning.
Willow Seward drove in two runs after she smoked a pitch down the left side and slid into third with a one out triple in the third. She was brought home shortly after by Moffet’s single.
The Gemz relied on the good pitching of Marisela Robles, with Moffet closing out the game. The pair scattered six hits.
Appel noted that his pitchers set the tone for the game.
“Both of our pitchers hit spots real well,” he said. “We mixed it up. We used a lot of movement and just really worked the corners well and kept them off balance and had the defense positioned were they were going to hit it.”
Marina Gibbs notched an RBI in the third inning on a single for the Titans. The Titans also plated a run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Nikki Kaualcahi.
The Titans threatened on many occasions, but the Gemz always stopped them. Appel applauded his team’s resiliency.
“The girls just woke up and decided that they wanted to play,” he said. “They weren’t ready to go home.” |
