An RBI single by Korey Kulpins in the top of the seventh inning Sunday lifted Desert Shock past Falcon Fastpitch 4-3 in the ASA West Valley 18u Summer Classic softball tournament at Victory Lane.

Kulpins, who relieved Hayley Flint in the circle in the fourth, then held off a furious Falcon rally in the bottom of the seventh.

A two-out double by Camille McIver put runners on second and third base, and a walk loaded the bases. Kulpins forced a ground out to short to end the game.

The Shock scored twice in the fourth on RBI by Kyra Claney and Brittany Mentzer.

The Falcons’ Megan Scarpalla’s sac fly to deep center in the bottom half of the inning made it 3-1.

The Shock got the run back in the fifth. A Falcon error brought in Kulpins, who was aboard on a double.

The Shock held their 3-1 lead until the bottom of the sixth, when a stolen base by Gracie Goulder led to an RBI single by Amber Underdown to make it 3-2. A Shock error set up Scarpalla for a game-tying RBI single.

Natalie Arviza led off the seventh with a double for the Shock but was erased in a pickle between third and home. That set the stage for Kulpins’ game-winning hit.
