The Storm started strong when pitcher Michelle Poe drove in two runs with a two-RBI double in the top of the first. Taylor Decker followed suit later in the first with her own two-out, standup double along the left foul line that brought in another run.
Scorpio answered in the bottom of the inning with an in-the-park home run by Alisha Ramirez, cutting the Storm lead to one, 3-2, with no outs. But Poe got two quick pop flies and a strikeout to end the inning.
The Storm piled on two more runs in the second on an RBI triple from Taylor Lewallen and an RBI by Daytona Everett.
The bottom half of the second looked promising for Scorpio for a moment, but a 6-4-3 double play squashed any hopes of a rally. In the bottom of the third, however, Scorpio would tie the score at 5 with an RBI single from Rachael Pleger and a two-RBI double from Julie Elias.
The Storm recovered with two-run fourth on RBI from Lewallen and Everett putting their team up 7-5.
The teams would only get to complete five innings as the time limit expired, but Scorpio made the most of the shortened game. A two-out RBI single by Senia Martinez put the go-ahead run on first. It proved too little, too late for Scorpio, however, as a well fielded ball by Lewallen at third ended the game.
Storm coach Carrie Smith credits her team’s success in the tournament to the flexibility of its players.
“When you've got 12 girls that you can play in any position, it’s a win-win situation for everyone on the team,” she said.
