The AZ Hotshots were nothing if not consistent Sunday, as they scored in every inning to come away with a 9-2 victory over the Tucson Elite in the 18u championship of the ASA Summer Breeze Classic at Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix.
After scoring single runs in the first three innings, the Hotshots broke it open with two in the fourth and three in the fifth before completing their feat with an additional run in the sixth.
"That's one of our goals," Hotshots coach Keith Householder said. "We try to do one run an inning."
Lauren Haeger led the way, both at the plate and on the mound. The Hotshots' cleanup hitter finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and worked all seven innings, striking out six and only allowing two runs.
"She throws the ball hard, hits the ball hard, keeps everybody loose," Householder said. "She's one of those players that only comes around once in a while."
The Elite actually got on the board first, as Malina Trujillo's two-out hit to center brought home Davina Flores to give them their only lead of the ballgame.
The Hotshots responded quickly, with Courtney Rodriguez knocking in Katie Richardson to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom in the first. Michelle Pluguez and Haeger had sacrifice flies in the second and third innings, respectively, that made it 3-1.
The Elite's only other run came in the top of the fourth, when Rose Magaddino doubled to the wall in left-center to score Trujillo.
From there it was all Hotshots.
Nicole Rascon and Rodriguez both drove in runs with infield singles in the fourth, and the Hotshots put the game out of reach in the fifth with three more, highlighted by Haeger's two-run shot up the middle. |
