Karlee Johnson of the Desert Wolves came within inches of a no-hitter Sunday, settling for a one-hitter and the 12u championship of the 42nd annual City of Phoenix Firecracker tournament at Rose Mofford Softball Complex.
Johnson faced just 14 batters in a 10-0 win shortened to four innings by run rule. Only two Angels reached base, Ally Steiner on a two-out error in the second and Meaghann Paradiso on a looper to left leading off the fourth that just tipped of the outstretched glove of the shortstop. Paradiso was erased on a double play started by second baseman Jessica Kaplan to end the game.
The Wolves started early, scoring twice in the first. Reece Benally reached on an error leading off the game, moved to third on a groundout and scored on another Angels error. After Zoe Harrison and Kiley Smith drew walks, with an out in between, Hannah Maybrey drove in the inning's second run with a single to center.
Stout Angels defense held the Wolves to two runs in the second. Emily Gipson snared a leadoff liner by Bailey Brennan, and Steiner, the Angels catcher, threw out two baserunners at second. Kaila Jacobi's single to center plated Gabby Moreno, who had walked, with the Wolves' third run, and Benally stole home with two outs for the fourth run.
The Wolves broke open the game with a four-run third, all after two were out.
Second baseman Marissa Wolf robbed Kaplan of a single leading off the inning, and after back-to-back singles by Smith and Maybrey, the Angels recorded the second out. Brennan's bouncer to short was misplayed, however, extending the inning and letting in two runs to make it 6-0. Moreno followed with an infield single, and Benally's single to the left side made it 7-0. Jacobi drew a walk, loading the bases, and the fourth run of the inning scored when Becky Ducar was hit by a pitch.
The Desert Wolves scored their final runs in the fourth. Maybrey reached on an infield single with one out, and Johnson and Brennan followed with back-to-back walks. Moreno's fielder's choice scored Maybrey, and Benally walked, loading the bases again. A pop up by Jacobi fell untouched, making it 10-0. |
