Even though it was hot enough to melt a scorpion's eyes Sunday, it took the Thunderhawks a while to warm up the bats for the 16u championship of the 42nd annual City of Phoenix Fireworks tournament at Rose Mofford Softball Complex. When they did, all Wacker would see was Thunderhawks on the basepaths.

The T-Hawks spotted Wacker a 2-0 lead after two innings then put up a six spot in the third en route to an 11-2 win.

Jayln Schollmeyer drew a walk to lead off the third, and Kaitlan Stott singled. A one-out, bases-loaded fielder's choice by Kelsey Montgomery plated the first run and left the bags full. Taylor Beeson tied it up with a walk.

Brittany Dvorak followed with a shot to the base of the fence in center, a two-run double that gave the Thuunderhawks the lead for good. Another run scored on a pitch to the screen, and after an out, Raianna Dobbs' sizzling single to center made it 6-2.

The T-Hawks added another run in the third on a RBI single by Amy Tarnowski, plating Mercedes Montoya, the courtesy runner for Schollmeyer, who had singled.

Tarnowski also settled down in the circle, as Wacker mounted only one more serious scoring threat. Lacey Fitch one-hopped the fence for a one-out double in the third, followed by a single to center by Margaret Stahm. Tarnowski got a pop up behind the plate that was nicely handled by Schollmeyer, though, and got the final out on a pop up that she handled herself.

The Thunderhawks closed out the game with two outs in the fifth.

Taylor Clark had a single sandwiched between two outs, but Tarnowski's towering pop up to the left side looked like it would end the inning and extend Wacker's chances. The pop up fell to the ground, though, and Montgomery drew a walk to load the bases. Beeson made it 8-2 with a single to left, and Dvorak ended the game by run rule with a two-RBI single to left.
