With two outs, the clock expired and a tiebreaker looming, Elyssa Hartsock ended a long day of softball Sunday night with a game-winning single, lifting Hotshots-Davis to a 2-1 win over the Arizona Storm in the 18uA championship of the ASA Braga Memorial at Rose Mofford Softball Complex.

The Storm, a legit contender for national honors at 16u, and the Hotshots, one of the state’s better 18u teams, staged a spirited battle on a muggy night in the finale of a strong 18u field.

Hotshots pitcher Ashley Quigley struck out nine and scattered seven hits in six innings. It looked like a first-inning run would be enough for the win, too.

Taylor Rauscher’s slap single with one out started the first-inning rally for the Hotshots. Stephanie Rieck reached on a beautiful bunt single, and both runners move up on a pitch to the screen. Jessica Belsterling plated Rauscher with a groundout to second for a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the top of the fifth, as Quigley and her defense kept the Storm away. A nice catch in center by Elise Samoy-Alvarado helped in the first. Quigley escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second with a big strike out, survived an error in the third and struck out the side in the fourth.

Courtney Rodriguez opened the fifth with a single to left for the Storm and moved to second on a sacrifice by Gracie Appelbe. Gabby Sandstedt, who had two infield singles in her first two trips to the plate, then ripped a shot to the base of the fence in left-center for an RBI double that tied the game 1-1.

Appelbe made a nice catch at second of a line drive off the bat of Belsterling to end a Hotshots’ rally in the bottom half of the inning, and it looked like the Storm was in business in the sixth when Annie Jordan led off with a double, her second hit of the night, and moved to third on a sac by Brooke Eifert-Pancamo.

Jordan was cut down at the plate on a fielder’s choice to preserve the tie, however, and Quigley got her ninth strike out to end the inning.

Taylor Piper then led off the bottom half with a single to center. She was still at first two outs later, then stole second just before time expired. Hartsock followed with her game-winner to right.

Who should be the Cardinals quarterback?
