Arizona State squeezed out an 8-4 softball win over the Idaho State Bengals on Friday night at Farrington Stadium behind the big bat of Caylyn Carlson.
With the Sun Devils down 4-2, Carlson put the ASU ahead for good with a three-run homer to right in the top of the sixth. Carlson finished the game 3-for-4 with the homer, a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
After allowing three runs in the fifth, ASU pitcher Megan Elliot buckled down in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side in order to preserve the lead. Elliot pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out seven.
The Devils took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Carlson singled and later scored on a line-drive triple to center by Katelyn Boyd. Boyd scored a batter later on a single by Krista Donnenwirth.
The Bengals immediately responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Megan Miller started the scoring with a two-run double and later scored when Erin Olander reached base on an error.
Idaho State scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Taylor Marchione.
Before Elliot pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh, Arizona State added four insurance runs in the top half to secure the win. Carlson provided the big hit in the inning, an RBI double.
The Devils lost several scoring chances early in the game due to overaggressive baserunning.
Christina Zambrana doubled to open up the second inning before being thrown out trying to score on a single to left by Lesley Rogers. An inning later, Boyd was thrown out at home attempting to score on a hit to right by Donnenwirth. |
