A nine run first inning led the Sun Devils to a 13-5 softball victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs Sunday in Tempe.
Seven of the first eight Sun Devils scored in the bottom of the first. Two Cal Poly errors prolonged the inning for Mandy Urfer, who finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI and a home run, to hit a three-RBI double that put the Devils up 6-0.
Lesley Rogers led the Sun Devils’ offensive attack by going 2-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, and four runs scored.
Although Cal Poly fought back with three second inning runs, the Mustangs never posed a legitimate threat to the Sun Devils who scored in three of the five innings played.
Megan Elliott started the game for the Sun Devils but lasted just two and two-thirds innings, as she allowed eight hits to the visiting Mustangs. Cal Poly finished with 11 hits, which ties their season high.
Arizona State finished non-conference play with 31-4 record and will begin conference play by hosting the University of Arizona at 7 p.m. Thursday. |
