Brigette Del Ponte figured in both Arizona runs Friday as the Wildcats beat the Brigham Young Cougars 2-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional softball series at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson.

Del Ponte, a graduate of Sunrise Mountain, doubled and scored the winning run in the sixth inning. She also doubled to drive in the first run of the game in the first inning.

The teams will meet again at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the best of three series. If necessary, a deciding game will be played at 4 p.m. Sunday. The winner goes to the Women’s College World Series.

With the game tied 1-1, Del Ponte doubled down the right field line. Lini Koria followed with a single, scoring Del Ponte.

Arizona ace Kenzie Fowler (33-6) was able to shut down the Cougars in the seventh, despite allowing a leadoff single. Fowler, a former Canyon del Oro star, pitched a complete game and finished with 10 strikeouts. She allowed one earned run and six hits.

Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Lauren Schutzler bunted for a single. She took second on a single by McClintock graduate K’Lee Arredondo. Cactus product Stacie Chambers flied out to right, and Schutzler took third. Del Ponte doubled to score Schutzler.

Brigham Young tied the game in the top of the sixth. Alexandra Hudson opened with a walk and took second on a sacrifice. Delaney Willard singled to score pinch runner Tiff Messerschmidt.
