The Sun Devils — and not just Florida humidity — made the Gators sweat a bit Sunday before falling 5-2 in the Super Regional and out of the NCAA softball tournament.

ASU managed to put pressure on Florida pitcher Stephanie Brombacher (33-6) in the bottom of the seventh before the Devils lost the series 2-0 at Gainesville, Fla. and were eliminated. The Sun Devils finished the season 44-17.

Florida (48-8) advances to the Women’s College World Series for the third straight season.

It took the Sun Devils 11 innings to score on Brombacher. They finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth (ASU was the home team for the second game). Kaylyn Castillo doubled and scored when Brombacher was called for an illegal pitch.

With one out in the seventh, Corona del Sol graduate Caylyn Carlson singled. Pinch-hitter Katie Crabb hit a bouncer back to Brombacher, who tried to throw to second base to start a double play. The throw was wide, and both runners were safe.

One out later, former Horizon star Katlyn Boyd singled up the middle. Lesley Rogers followed with an RBI single. So the Devils had the winning run at the plate. Florida coach Tim Walton held a conference with his team on the mound.

Brombacher was able to recover and get Castillo to pop out.

For the game, the Sun Devils outhit the Gators 7-6, but Florida’s hits had a little more oomph. Kelsey Bruder hit two homers and Megan Bush hit one.

Boyd, Rogers and Carlson each collected two hits for the Sun Devils.
